The challenge

CARFAX Europe had a data organization split across engineering, analytics, and business intelligence, but it was not yet set up to move as one. Leadership wanted the department to reliably enable data-driven initiatives across the business, which called for clearer structure, stronger hiring, and better ways of working.

What I did

I took over the data department of three teams and 15+ people across data engineering, analytics, and business intelligence. I focused on the organization first: hiring, restructuring the teams, and developing the people in them so each team had a clear remit and the group worked together. On the platform side I modernized the AWS stack the teams relied on, so that reporting and analytics were dependable rather than ad hoc.

Outcomes

  • Restructured three teams into a data department that could deliver as one.
  • Strengthened the team through hiring and developing engineers and analysts.
  • Modernized the platform so analytics and BI ran on a dependable foundation.
  • Positioned data as an enabler of business initiatives, not a back-office function.
