Data professionals are becoming one-man bands

What you see on this picture is pretty much the reality for many data professionals in 2025. Teams got smaller, specialised roles disappeared, and suddenly you are expected to play multiple instruments at once.

There is no dedicated data engineer, analytics engineer, BI developer, data scientist anymore. Instead you have one or two people covering it all, juggling between requests, pipelines, dashboards, experiments, and governance.

I don't say it's good or bad, but it's the reality. Companies want lean teams and direct business value. Which means if you are in data today you need to be flexible, learn new skills, and accept that you might not be "just a specialist" anymore.

The good news is, if you manage to survive and even enjoy this setup, you are more valuable than ever.
